Description
The IBM Magstar 3590 Tape Subsystem with
3590 Extended High Performance Cartridge Tape support
now provides:
20 GB native cartridge capacity for the Magstar 3590
Model B11 and B1A Tape Drives, with up to 60 GB
cartridge capacity (with 3:1 compression).
40 GB native cartridge capacity for the Magstar 3590
Model E11 and E1A Tape Drives, with up to 120 GB
cartridge capacity (with 3:1 compression).
Continued support for the 3590 High Performance
Cartridge Tape.
Intermix of both types of cartridges in IBM and
StorageTek automation solutions.
The new 3590 Extended High Performance Cartridge Tape
(Extended Length Cartridge) is distinctly labeled with
green labels, a green leader block, and two green inserts
with identification notches. All 3590 Model B11, B1A, E11,
and E1A Tape Drives shipped on or after March 3, 2000,
will support the 3590 Extended Length Cartridge.
Features are available to add support of the Extended
Length Cartridge to all 3590 Tape Drives installed prior to
March 3, 2000. When doing a model conversion of a
3590 B Model to an E Model, the Extended Media Support
must now also be added to that conversion.
Features are also available to add support of the
Extended Length Cartridge to the 3590 Tape Subsystem
or 3494 Tape Library, for any tape subsystem that will
contain the new Extended Length Cartridges. These
features will provide the subsystem maintenance
information and microcode updates required to support
the new cartridges.
The Extended Length Cartridge is not supported for use
in the 3495 Tape Library or the 3494 Model B16 or B18
Virtual Tape Server. It is also not supported on 3590 Tape
Drives attached to the 3591 Model A01 Tape Control Unit.
Year 2000
This product does not have date dependencies and is
therefore Year 2000 ready.
Euro Currency
This product is not impacted by euro currency.
Product Positioning
The Magstar 3590, IBMs highest performance tape
subsystem, provides high capacity and reliability for the
S/390, AS/400, RS/6000, and a variety of IBM and non-IBM
UNIX
and Windows NT systems. It offers significant
enhancements in performance, capacity, data integrity,
reliability, and availability over IBM 3480, 3490, or 3490E
tape drives. The Magstar 3590 may also relieve backup
time and space constraints and provide the increased
capacity needed to support todays growing disk backup
requirements. (Although the 3590 provides the capability
of very high tape performance, other components of the
system may limit the actual performance achieved.)
IBM provides the Magstar 3590 in a wide range of product
offerings to meet a diverse set of customer requirements.
A single investment in Magstar technology can extend
capacity as well as provide performance benefits to a
broad array of storage solutions:
IBM Magstar 3494 Tape Library
StorageTek Libraries
Stand-alone (IBM and standard 19-inch rack)
Magstar 3590 in a 3494
The Magstar 3590 offers the greatest performance and
capacity for use in the IBM Magstar 3494 Tape Library.
The tape drives and cartridge slots of the 3494 can be
shared between multiple heterogeneous platforms, giving
you greater flexibility.
StorageTek Libraries
The Magstar 3590 can be used with the StorageTek 4410
and 9310 Automated Cartridge Systems (ACS) in a SCSI
or S/390 environment using Magstar 3590 Tape Drives in
Magstar 3590 Model C12/14 Frames and 3590 ESCON
Controllers. This provides the Magstar benefits of
increased capacity, reliability, and performance over
18-/36-track technology or StorageTek drive alternatives.
Moving Magstar 3590 to Different Storage Solutions
Magstar 3590 offers configuration flexibility and long
range investment protection in its unique ability to be
used, and re-used, in multiple storage solutions.
Capitalizing on IBMs Seascape
architecture, 3590
Magstar Tape Drives are storage assets that can be
moved from storage solution to storage solution. By
adding features and doing model conversions, Magstar
tape drives can be transformed to fit into stand-alone
subsystems, StorageTek silos, or IBM 3494 automated
solutions (including the Magstar Virtual Tape Server). An
initial investment can now grow with your ever-changing
business requirements.
