Technical Information
Specified Operating Environment
Hardware Requirements:
The Magstar 3590 Model B11,
B1A, E11, or E1A Tape Drives can now utilize either the
new 3590 Extended High Performance Cartridge Tape
(Extended Length Cartridge) or the 3590 High
Performance Cartridge Tape (Standard Length Cartridge).
The Extended Length Cartridge has a native capacity that
is twice the capacity of the Standard Length Cartridge.
Many solutions require that all 3590 drives in the
subsystem have the Extended Media Support capability
to optimize drive/media allocation. If Extended Length
Cartridges are used, IBM recommends updating all tape
drives, to allow flexibility to mount Extended Length
Cartridges on any tape drive. However, if Extended
Length Cartridges are to be used only on tape drives that
are part of a defined subset, then all drives in that subset
must be updated. Some examples are:
ESCON
-attached tape drives in individual IBM
Magstar 3494 Tape Libraries and StorageTek
Automated Cartridge Systems (ACS)
3590 stand-alone drives in an MVS
complex
All 3590 Tape Drive shipments on or after March 3, 2000,
will have the support for the Extended Length Cartridge.
MES feature number 5780 (Extended Media Support
BXX) is also available to add this support feature to
existing Magstar 3590 Model B11 or B1A Tape Drives (B
Models). MES feature number 5781 (Extended Media
Support
EXX) is also available to add this support
feature to existing Magstar 3590 Model E11 or E1A Tape
Drives (E Models).
Feature number 9780 (Extended Media Support) must be
added to the Magstar 3494 Model L10, L12, L14, D12, or
D14 to provide the library manager support for any 3494
Tape Library that will contain the new Extended Length
Cartridges. If 3590 Extended High Performance Cartridge
Tape is used in the 3494 Tape Library, this feature must
be on the 3494 Model D12 or D14 Drive Unit containing
the 3590 Tape Drives with Extended Media Support, and
also on the 3494 Model L10, L12, or L14 Control Unit
frame.
Feature number 9780 (Extended Media Support) must be
added to the Magstar 3590 Model A14, C12, or C14 to
provide the subsystem support for the new Extended
Length Cartridges. If 3590 Extended High Performance
Cartridge Tape is used in any 3590 Tape Drive installed
in that 3590 Model A14, C12, or C14, then this feature
must be installed on all the tape drives in that 3590
Model A14, C12, or C14 frame also.
Unlabeled and uninitialized Extended Length Cartridges
can be included with the order of a new 3590 Model B11
or E11 Tape Drive (by specifying #8140), Model C12 or
C14 Silo Compatible Frame (by specifying #8240), or 3494
Tape Library frame (by specifying #8610). Labeled or
initialized Extended Length Cartridges can be ordered
using machine type 3599 or purchased through Priority
Fulfillment Services. Refer to Hardware Announcement
100-048, dated February 29, 2000. Also refer to the
Supplies section.
3590 B Model to E Model Tape Drive Conversions
When a 3590 B Model Tape Drive is converted to a
3590 E Model, feature number 5781 (Extended Media
Support
EXX) must be included in the MES order for
that model conversion.
Software Requirements:
For the OS/390 environment,
support for the Extended Length Cartridge is provided in
DFSMS/MVS
Version 1.3 and higher. For other system
environments, the software requirements are the same
