5.3 System Dump Support
Your system will generate a system dump when a severe error occurs. System
dumps can also be initiated by root, which is useful when, in the rare case, your
system appears to have hung, but no dump has occurred. A system dump creates
a "picture" of your system's memory contents and is useful for support staff and
developers in helping determine why a system crashed.
The AIX dump facility is included in the bos.sysmgt.serv_aid fileset. By default,
whenever a dump is generated, it is written to the paging space. The next time the
system is booted, AIX will look for a dump in the paging space, and if one is
present, AIX will ask whether it should be copied onto tape (if present) or diskette.
Figure 27 is an example of the screen you will see upon booting after a system
dump has been taken.

5.3.1 Defining a Directory for the System Dump
It is possible to define a directory into which AIX copies any dump that it finds in
the paging space at boot time. Providing there is enough disk space and the
paging space is used as the dump device, it is advisable to always have this option
set. To set this, perform the following steps:
1. Determine how much space will be required by the dump. Enter the following
command:
sysdumpdev -e
2. Use the following SMIT fastpath:
smit dump
